Mnet to Come Up with a New Music Drama as Follow-up to “Monstar”

Music channel Mnet is looking towards coming up with a new music drama within the year. According to a news report, Mnet is already planning the follow-up to their first successful attempt at a music drama, 2013′s “Monstar.”

The yet-untitled 2014 Mnet music drama is said to be about the stories of young people who have a passionate love of music, their growth, friendship and love lives.

The drama is already attracting attention for the people behind the scenes. Producers and writers from the production teams of reality and music shows are coming together to produce a drama. Director Kim Yong Bum of “Super Star K” and “Dancing 9″ takes the helm, while “Real Men” and “Music Bank” writer Shin Myung Jin joins forces with Jung Su Hyun of “Non-Stop” and “Apgujeong Diary” to produce the script. This collaboration of the director and writers with background in survival reality, music and sitcom programs creates anticipation for the possible birth of a new genre hit for Mnet. ...

Monstar Episode 3 Recap And Screenshot

Episode 3 of Monstar is so good I literally got chills down my spine after watching it. Just the right amounts of everything that has made this drama so addicting from the get go, but then taking all the characters and their intertwining stories and moving it forward decisively. The music was exquisite once again, and the characters try to open the channels of communication, sometimes successfully but mostly giant pits of failure. Thankfully there are tons of great adult figures hanging around this drama to add some hard knocks and give some perspective. While the kids are crushing and/or hating on each other, the teachers and manager and one very weird trench coat dude is looking on wondering how best to get everyone back on track. Turns out all it takes is a little Poop, and honestly that might be the most innovative and gut-bustingly hilarious blackmail attempt in the history of musical extortion. I love watching Monstar because the story just feels very charming and fun, with Seol Chan’s growing fascination with Se Yi absolutely hitting every one of my happy buttons. ...

BEAST's Yong Jun Hyung on "Monstar": "I Don't Think I Will Be Able to Forget It"

It’s over!

Mnet‘s hit music drama, “Monstar,” aired its final episode last night, and lead Yong Jun Hyung of idol group BEAST gave his closing remarks.

“Monstar” is Yong Jun Hyung’s debut drama. He stated, “It was hard, but I made a lot of fun and happy memories. I’m so thankful.”

The idol and actor picked one of the scenes he remembered most as the scene in which he played basketball with fellow male lead Kang Ha Neul. For another, he chose the scene in which his school band, Color Bar, sang “Don’t Make Me Cry.” “It was a scene in which I felt a sense of ecstasy even while filming.” In this scene, Color Bar surprises everyone with their talent and teamwork when no one had any expectations for this group of underdogs. ...

Written and Video Preview for Episode 12 of Monstar

The heydays of watching tons of dramas all the time are long gone for me, but in its place is a contentment borne from finding just a handful a year that bring me delight. This week started with the end of Cruel City (Heartless City) and will end with the conclusion of Monstar. I’m sad two of my fave dramas at this moment are ending the same time but optimistic the newly arrived options will yield one or two to take its place. Monstar was the biggest surprise of the year for me, having heard nothing about it and the depth of my affection for it once I started watching really is unprecedented for something so simple. Just a bunch of high school kids and lots of musical interludes, with background stories filled with angst peppered in to form a narrative glue. But it worked like magic on me and I was totally swepted into its world. The latter half of its run lacked the excitement and pop of the earlier episodes but was lovely nevertheless. I’m not annoyed that the drama stuck with the Seol Chan-Se Yi-Sun Woo love and friendship triangle until the end since that was the main crux of the emotional narrative to begin with. Of course the drama could have done more and did things better, but I am strangely certain I’ll like the ending to come. New stills have been released showing Seol Chan serenading Se Yi in his bedroom singing her father’s song with his newly learned guitar skills courtesy of Ji Woong. Nice, and she better notice that he adorably framed her note and shone a spotlight on it. This was one of my favorite OTPs this year and I’m praying for a little bit more cuteness and skinship before these kids swan off to stage left after this Friday. ...

Written and Video Previews for Episode 11 of Monstar

I seriously can’t get enough of Seol Chan’s shocked-jealous face in Monstar. Yong Jun Hyung is doing such a fantastic job of selling emotionally stunted but growing like a snail Seol Chan. I feel like Monstar has lost a bit of its sizzle heading towards the final stretch. Not a lot, just a tiny bit, and its all due to the drama hanging on with the Seol Chan-Se Yi-Sun Woo love triangle still. But then the latest preview dropped for episode 11 showing Seol Chan singing the song “I Fell in Love with a Friend’s Friend”, and I realized there is a reason this love triangle hasn’t been disposed of sooner. Because Seol Chan and Sun Woo’s past conflict appears to be one of the final issues to be resolved, then the love triangle matters greatly because Seol Chan has effectively stolen the girl his former best friend called dibs on. That is a no-no in bromance-land, where the ye olde adage “bros before hos” will hold true if Seol Chan and Sun Woo kiss and make up. And yes, I want to actually see some kissing with the making up part, LOL. I’ve never been particularly swept up by the Na Na-Sun Woo alterna-ship so I don’t feel shafted the drama hasn’t left enough time to properly develop any possible romance between them. ...

Monstar Episode 10 Recap And Screenshot

Seol Chan stares quietly at Se Yi before leaning in to kiss her. She initially struggles from the shock but then settles into the kiss. Both of them has their eyes closed until suddenly both open their eyes and stare at each other.

Each jumps back with Seol Chan the first to ask what Se Yi has done to him? Se Yi asks nervously what he did, and was it a joke again? Seol Chan at least has the sincerity this time to say flat out it’s not a joke. Whew, thank god for no more misdirection. ...

Written and Video Preview for Episode 10 of Monstar

Another Monday, another long countdown to Friday not for the weekend to start but for another episode of Monstar to arrive. I’m seriously nervous about what’ll happen once this drama ends and I don’t get to spend time with the members of Color Bar anymore. Sniffles, they better all be headed to big and better places. Now that the unexpected though long awaited first kiss between Seol Chan and Se Yi happened at the end of episode 9, I can finally talk about how Seol Chan was wearing his grandma’s bingo shirt and Se Yi’s initially shock and clawing at him was about as romantic as trying to kiss a hissing cat. But I loved how quiet and peaceful the moments leading up to the kiss were, and how the two of them sank into the moment right when the credit rolled. I thought the PD filmed it oddly, or did it on purpose, with Seol Chan’s head pretty much obscuring the lip sucking but that might be intentional since this drama skews much younger in its audience. We can’t have fangirls traumatized by seeing their Jun Hyung oppa making out with a girl onscreen, right? I think it’s fairly obvious to everyone, including Sun Woo, that Se Yi just isn’t into him like that. I like that he got to tell her his feelings and give her time to work through her response. I’m not sure three episodes is enough to develop a credible budding romance between Sun Woo and Na Na, not to mention the next episode seems to fully blow the lid of Eun Ha’s long simmering angst that has taken a literal back seat to all the other Color Bar member’s more pressing issues. I’m not saying Eun Ha’s loneliness and desire to find a purpose or talent of her own isn’t important, but I hope she doesn’t manifest it in a negative and substitute way on Seol Chan and Se Yi’s tentative romantic sprouts by stomping on it. ...

Preview of Guitar Date for Seol Chan and Se Yi in Episode 8 of Monstar

Preview of Guitar Date for Seol Chan and Se Yi in Episode 8 of Monstar

Huzzah, there be some Seol Chan-Se Yi goodness coming up in Monstar episode 8! Finally our Star gets his long awaited duet with the clueless Sheep girl, and unlike her duet with Sun Woo for the music evaluations which was done in public in front of other students, this one will be in the privacy of what looks like a small guitar studio. Seol Chan may be a musical genius but guitar isn’t his instrument of choice, whereas Sun Woo has given up the keyboard instruments in exchange for the strings so he’s perfectly at ease strumming a guitar and singing a love song to Se Yi. I love that Se Yi is showing Seol Chan the ropes around a guitar and his reaction is as honest and adorable as I expected. All the little touches between them makes him feel hyper aware. I would want Se Yi to get a clue quicker but I think she’s already made such strides based on how happy she is to spend time with him when before he was like this little bug that buzzed annoyingly around her. Even if the Sun Woo-Na Na secondary ship doesn’t capture my heart the way the OTP does, I appreciate this drama creating that other love line just so Sun Woo can get over his childhood crush on Se Yi and stop trying to compete with Seol Chan for her affection. I think part of Sun Woo and Seol Chan’s issues is Se Yi, but the majority is whatever misunderstanding happened between then when they were kids. It was so sweet to see them as BFFs in some flashback scenes and those two kid actors masterfully captured the Seol Chan arrogance and the Sun Woo reserve. I’m looking forward also to a flashback showing us what went wrong between little Kyu Dong and little Do Nam, both of those kid actors were fantastic as well. This little music drama has become the light of my week, giving my Fridays double the excitement and anticipation beyond the oncoming weekend. Check out the cute guitar date spoiler stills and short preview below. ...

The Love Triangle Heats up in Monstar with New Scene Preview from Episode 8

The Love Triangle Heats up in Monstar with New Scene Preview from Episode 8

Yippee yay, as this shortened work week heads into a long holiday weekend for me, what better way to kick start the happy time off than a piping hot just released new snippet from the upcoming episode 8 of Monstar. Part of me wants more Monstar episodes but knowing that we only have 5 more left makes me want to ration it like Charlie with his lone candy bar nibbles. I’m not sure episode 8 is going to be a turning point for the mish-mash crew of Color Bar each with their own issues, but I do see some major breakthroughs coming. The first is that Sun Woo is going to confess his feelings to Se Yi, in the scene below he strangely decides to do it to Seol Chan’s face which makes not only Se Yi confused but I as well. If he really and sincerely likes her, the constant jostling with Seol Chan over he makes no sense. He ought to take her aside privately and tell her he’s nursed a crush on her since elementary school and that crush has now come back and transformed into a more mature affection after spending time with the now grown up her. It’s hilarious to watch Sun Woo and Seol Chan bicker and dick-wave all the time, but it rather undermines Sun Woo’s feelings for Se Yi that it seems to hinge on whatever Seol Chan days to goad him. I notice Se Yi has a new hairstyle with bangs and wonder if it’s a change precipitated by some sort of confusion over her feelings for Seol Chan? Episode 8 also appears to push Kyu Dong and Do Nam’s fractured friendship to a point of explosion, whether Kyu Dong finally seeks to escape from it all permanently or Do Nam makes up with him and lets whatever mistakes that happened in the past go, we’ll just have to wait and see. I keep wondering what Eun Ha’s ultimate purpose in this drama is other than as the comic relief, and then upon rewatching the drama this week I think I understand now. She’s the Greek chorus, the scribe, the all-seeing eye – she is probably the one telling this story years later of how a bunch of broken high school kids formed a crazy awesome band and in the process found healing through music.  ...
